University of Wisconsin Associate Head Coach Greg Gard builds a half-court man defense designed to protect the lane and force the opposition to play five on five. The tenet of the defense are to keep the play above you by keeping your backside to the baseline. Gard starts building the defense with one-on-one close out and driving line drills and continues with three-on-three and four-on-four drills to teach the defensive rules. The defense is designed to not help on the strong side and bring all of the help from the back side in order to better defend lane line drives so prevalent in today’s game. Gard teaches how to defend all types of screens with a special emphasis on ball screens and hand offs. Transition defense is discussed and demonstrated.
