Former Virginia Union Coach Dave Robbins has developed a Division II powerhouse and the circle defense is a large part of their success. The circle defense is an aggressive, trapping zone run out of a 2-3 or 3-2 set. The defense is taught in a clinic setting on-court in a 5-on-5 situation. It can be run with the three back line players being the “circle” in a 2-3 set or the three perimeter players as the “circle” in a 3-2 set. The defense can be run with scramble action - strong side guard trap - or mad dog action - four-men trapping.
